What is a (W)heels, (T)racks and (R)ollers Endorsement?

A WTR endorsement is a licence add-on, not an operator qualification. It proves you’ve completed a theory course and shown you can move a special-type vehicle safely on and off a road.

Without certification, operating these vehicles on public roads, carparks, beaches, riverbeds or unlocked private yards is illegal; this applies to individual operators and civil crews alike.

Do You Need a WTR?

You need a W, T or R endorsement if you drive any special-type vehicle on a road. This does not include agricultural vehicles, tractors or forklifts (forklifts have their own separate F endorsement).

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • W (Wheels) — for machines on wheels that aren’t forklifts, passenger vehicles, tractors, fire engines, trade vehicles or recovery vehicles. Think loaders, graders, scrapers.
  • T (Tracks) — for machines on self-laying tracks (caterpillar tracks). Think excavators or dozers being moved on a road.
  • R (Rollers) — for machines that run on rollers, like road rollers used in roadworks and construction.

Which Licence Class Do You Need?

The endorsement alone isn’t enough. You also need the right class of full licence based on the weight and speed of the vehicle.
