Truck Licence Training for Upper Hutt

Getting your truck licence from Upper Hutt is a straightforward run over the hill. 2Fathers Driver Training covers Class 2, 4 and 5 plus your Forklift OSH and F, Wheels Tracks Rollers and Dangerous goods endorsements, with classroom courses at our Porirua facility at Kenepuru, about 38 minutes from Upper Hutt via Haywards.

We are NZTA and MITO approved. That matters, because our courses combine the required unit standards with practical training and assessment, so you can get a full heavy vehicle licence without holding the heavy vehicle learner for the usual stand-down period.

Most of our students are getting licensed for work. Freight and delivery runs down the valley, civil and roading crews on the subdivisions going in across the city, and warehouse and yard jobs around Trentham. We will tell you straight which class or endorsement the job actually needs, then book you in.

Truck Licences for Upper Hutt (Class 2, 4 and 5)

Not sure which class you need? It comes down to vehicle weight and what you will be driving for work. Quick version below, with the full detail on each course page.

Class 2 Truck Licence

Class 2 is where most paid driving work starts, from rigid delivery trucks working Fergusson Drive to freight runs down SH2. It covers a vehicle with a GVM between 6,001kg and 18,000kg, or a truck and trailer combination up to 12,000kg. You need your Class 2 learner first, then our two-day course (unit standards 24089 and 17574) plus practical assessment gets you to a full licence. Full details and pricing: Class 2 Truck Licence Training

Class 4 Truck Licence

Class 4 is the heavy rigid licence Hutt Valley civil, roading and freight employers often ask for. It is a one-day theory course (unit standard 17576) plus practical assessment. If you have not done the logbook unit (24089) before, you add the logbook day, which runs the day prior. Full details and pricing: Class 4 Truck Licence Training

Class 5 Truck Licence

Class 5 is the top heavy combination licence, the one for the big rigs hauling down SH2 and over the Remutaka Hill to the Wairarapa. One-day theory (unit standard 17577) plus practical assessment, with the logbook day added if you have not already done unit 24089. Full details and pricing: Class 5 Truck Licence Training

Endorsements (WTR, Dangerous Goods, Forklift and OSH)

Plenty of jobs around Upper Hutt and the wider Hutt Valley want an endorsement on top of the licence. Here is what each one covers.
Roller used in WTR endorsement training for Upper Hutt civil and roading crews
Forklift used in F endorsement and OSH certificate training for Upper Hutt workers

Wheels, Tracks and Rollers (WTR) Endorsement

Loaders, graders, excavators and rollers are everyday gear on the roading and subdivision work going in around Upper Hutt. If you move any of them on a public road, you need the WTR endorsement. Our Porirua course covers all three (Wheels, Tracks and Rollers, unit standards 16701, 16702 and 16703) and runs up to a day. Full details and pricing: WTR Endorsement

Dangerous Goods (D) Endorsement

If your work involves fuel, chemicals or anything classed as hazardous freight, you need the D endorsement. It catches out more couriers than people expect, with everyday items like aerosols, cleaning products and batteries counting above set limits. It is a one-day theory course (unit standard 16718) at our Porirua facility. Full details and pricing: Dangerous Goods (D) Endorsement

Forklift (F) Endorsement and OSH Operator Certificate

Forklift work splits into two tickets. The OSH Operator Certificate covers workplace use, and the F endorsement covers driving a forklift anywhere the public can reach, including open yards and car parks. Our one-day Porirua course covers both, which suits warehouse, yard and factory work around Trentham and the valley. Full details and pricing: Forklift (F) Endorsement and OSH Certificate

What Our Customers Say

How It Works, and the Trip from Upper Hutt

Classroom courses run at our Porirua facility at Kenepuru, not in Upper Hutt itself. The drive is simple: SH2 down the valley to the Haywards interchange, SH58 over the hill past Judgeford, then onto Transmission Gully at Pauatahanui and off again at the Kenepuru exit. Roughly 24km, about a 38 minute drive outside of peak.

The train works but it is the long way round. The Hutt Valley Line runs from Upper Hutt to Wellington, where you change for the Kapiti Line out to Kenepuru. Most Upper Hutt students drive, and plenty carpool with a workmate doing the same course.

The theory runs in class. Class 2 is two days, Class 4 and 5 are a day (plus the logbook day if you need unit 24089). Endorsement courses are up to a day. Practical training and assessment for the truck licences happen at a time we agree with you, and we will tell you upfront if that lands on a separate day so you can plan work around it.
You will get your pre-course reading before the day, so you turn up ready. For the forklift practical, bring steel-cap boots and a hi-vis if you have them.

FAQs for Upper Hutt

Where does the training happen if I live in Upper Hutt?

Classroom courses run at our Porirua facility in Kenepuru. From Upper Hutt that is SH2 to Haywards, SH58 over the hill, then Transmission Gully to the Kenepuru exit. About 38 minutes outside of peak.

It depends on the vehicle weight. Class 2 covers most rigid trucks (6,001kg to 18,000kg GVM), Class 4 is for heavier rigid vehicles, and Class 5 is the heavy combination licence combination for big rigs, or truck and trailers.

Tankers can be class 2, 4 and 5.

If an employer has named a class, get that one. If you are not sure, call us on 027 287 3748 and we will work it out with you.

For Class 2 you need your Class 2 learner first, and the same applies for Class 4 and 5 at their level. Because we are an approved course provider, the course removes the usual heavy vehicle learner stand-down period, so you are not waiting months to get fully licensed.

Truck courses start at $1,100 (Class 4), $1,200 (Class 5) and $1,300 (Class 2), GST included. Endorsements are $525 (WTR), $400 (DG) and from $375 (Forklift and OSH). Afterpay is available.

Usually, yes. If you are paid to carry items that count as dangerous goods, above the set limits, you need the D endorsement. In the Hutt that catches a lot of people given the fuel terminals and chemical sites at Seaview, and it also catches couriers carrying things like aerosols, cleaning products or certain batteries. If you are not sure where your loads sit, give us a call before you book.

If you operate a forklift anywhere the public can reach, including wharves and open yards, you need the F endorsement on top of the OSH Operator Certificate. For a fully closed, locked site, the OSH Certificate on its own is enough. Our one-day course covers both, which is what most Seaview and Petone yard and warehouse roles ask for.

Class 2 is two days of theory plus a practical assessment. Class 4 and 5 are one day of theory plus a practical assessment, with an extra logbook day if you have not done unit standard 24089 before. Endorsement courses run up to a day. The practical assessment is sometimes on a separate day, and we will tell you upfront so you can plan around work.

If you move loaders, graders, excavators or rollers on a public road, you need the WTR endorsement. If you are also driving the truck that carts the gear or the metal, that is usually Class 2 or Class 4 depending on the vehicle. Call us on 027 287 3748 with the job details and we will tell you exactly what you need.

Truck and Licence Training for Upper Hutt

Upper Hutt’s industrial base has been rebuilding. The old Dunlop tyre factory site at Trentham is now the South Pacific Industrial Park and Brewtown, and new business units keep going in off Whakatiki Street, the arterial that links SH2 with the city centre. Add long-standing local freight and storage firms, Trentham Army Camp, and the civil crews on subdivisions going in across the city, and there is steady local demand for Class 2, 4 and 5 drivers and forklift operators.

Heavy vehicle work out of Upper Hutt means hills. SH2 climbs over the Remutaka to the Wairarapa, and Haywards is the everyday link to Porirua and the coast. Confident hill driving and load management are part of the job here, and part of what the training covers.

We are not in central Upper Hutt. Classroom courses run at our Kenepuru facility in Porirua, about 38 minutes over Haywards. For a city this side of the hill, that is a small trade for getting Class 2, 4 and 5 plus every endorsement from one NZTA and MITO approved provider.
