Training Details
To drive any Truck or Rigid Vehicle with a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) of between 6001kgs and up to 18,000Kg or a tuck and trailer combination not exceeding 12,000Kg you require a Class 2 Heavy Vehicle Licence.
Prerequisite: You must hold your Class 2L (Learner Licence) before you’re able to sit this course. For information on gaining your licence - refer to the NZTA.
Training Guide
The Class 2 Licence time reduction course is made up of 3 components which are compulsory:
- Learn how to identify the causes and signs of fatigue, understand how fatigue can affect driving performance, and explore practical life skills and work measures to prevent fatigue.
- Become familiar with requirements and penalties related to work time, driver logbook obligations, and the proper management of logbook records.
- Gain the skills to complete and present driver logbook entries with confidence.
- Recognise and explain driving hazards associated with a rigid vehicle and describe effective measures to minimise these risks.
- Understand the requirements for safe loading practices and driving techniques that help manage the challenges of a high centre of gravity.
- Be able to conduct a thorough pre-use walk-around inspection.
- Drive a rigid vehicle safely and efficiently across different traffic and road conditions.
- Manoeuvre the vehicle in reverse.
- How to park, shut down, and secure the vehicle properly, as well as accurately complete driver logbook entries.
- Depending on prior experience, students are given (as included with the course) up to 2 hours of practical driver training in a Class 2 vehicle prior to undertaking their practical assessment.
- The practical assessment is carried out after the theory component has been successfully completed. The assessment requires the trainee to demonstrate, in practical terms, the theory they have learned from their Day 2 training.
You will not be asked to load a vehicle as part of this practical assessment, but any vehicle supplied must be loaded as per the requirements as detailed in the booking process. - Whilst we aim to conduct practical training and assessments immediately after completing the theory component of the course, we cannot guarantee they will take place on the same day as your theory course due to scheduling constraints.

Study guides for the course will be available before your attendance once the course fees are paid in full.
During theory assessments, it is a closed-book exam—no learning materials or phones may be used to help you with answers.
