Truck Licences in Masterton (Class 2, 4 and 5)

Class 2 Truck Licence
Class 2 is where most paid driving work starts in the Wairarapa, from rural delivery and rigid stock trucks to town freight runs. It covers a vehicle with a GVM between 6,001kg and 18,000kg, or a truck and trailer combination up to 12,000kg.

Class 4 Truck Licence
Class 4 covers the heavier rigid trucks, the bulk, tipper and logging units working above the Class 2 weight range. One day of theory (unit standard 17576) plus a practical assessment gets you there, and if you have not done the logbook unit (24089) you add the logbook day, which runs the day before. Class 5 Truck Licence
Class 5 is the heavy combination licence for truck and trailer units, the log rigs running into the Waingawa hub and the linehaul heading over the Remutaka. Endorsements (WTR, Dangerous Goods, Forklift and OSH)
Plenty of Wairarapa jobs want an endorsement alongside the licence. Here is what each one covers.
Wheels, Tracks and Rollers (WTR) Endorsement
Forestry skid sites, farm contracting and roading jobs across the Wairarapa all run loaders, graders, excavators and rollers. Moving any of them on a public road takes the WTR endorsement. Our course covers all three (Wheels, Tracks and Rollers, unit standards 16701, 16702 and 16703) and runs up to a day.
Dangerous Goods (D) Endorsement
Carting fuel to farms, agricultural chemicals or anything else classed as hazardous freight takes the D endorsement. Couriers get caught too, with everyday items like aerosols and cleaning products counting once you are over the set limits. It is a one-day theory course (unit standard 16718).
Forklift (F) Endorsement and OSH Operator Certificate
Forklift work needs two tickets. The OSH Operator Certificate covers the workplace, and the F endorsement covers anywhere the public can reach, including open yards. Our one-day course covers both, which suits the timber yards, mills and rural supply stores around town.

Do I need my learner licence before I start?
Yes. You need the learner licence for the class you are training for, so the Class 2 learner for the Class 2 course and the same at Class 4 and 5. Because we are an approved course provider, the course removes the usual heavy vehicle learner stand-down period.
How much does it cost?
Truck courses start at $1,100 (Class 4), $1,200 (Class 5) and $1,300 (Class 2), GST included. Endorsements are $525 (WTR), $400 (DG) and from $375 (Forklift and OSH). Afterpay is available.
I drive log trucks or stock trucks around the Wairarapa. Which class do I need?
A truck and trailer unit over 25,000kg, which covers most log rigs, needs Class 5. A rigid stock truck or spreader sits at Class 2 or Class 4 depending on its weight. If the employer has named a class, get that one, and if you are not sure, call us on 027 287 3748 with the vehicle details.
I cart fuel or farm chemicals on rural runs. Do I need a Dangerous Goods endorsement?
If you are paid to carry goods classed as dangerous above the set limits, yes. That covers fuel, agricultural chemicals and plenty of everyday items like aerosols once the quantities add up. If you are not sure where your loads sit, give us a call before you book.

Truck and Licence Training in Masterton
Masterton has been the Wairarapa’s working hub since the railway arrived in 1880 and made it the region’s market and distribution town. It is still the largest town in the valley, with around 22,600 people and the rural economy running through it.
The heavy work sits at Waingawa on the southern boundary.
